Free State Stars get the 'big chop'

Free State Stars were dealt a heavy blow on Sunday when they were relegated to the Mvela Golden League after playing to 0-0 draw against Dynamos in a Castle Premiership match played at the Giyane Stadium.

The very tense match, played before a large crowd of very excited home and travelling fans, started off at a blistering pace.

The visitors' first clear chance of the match came in the 22nd minute when Jimmy Khauleza hit a low and hard cross into the 'Dynamites' goal-mouth, but none of his team-mates were there to finish it off.

Four minutes later, Stars' rising talent Siphiwe Tshabalala came close to opening the account for his side, but his powerful long-range shot was off-target.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder proved to be a pain in a Dynamos defence that was beginning to show signs of cracking as the match progressed.

Stars were presented with another opportunity to go ahead in the 47th minute, but captain Clive Hachilensa's attempted header was cleared off the line by Dynamos' Ivan Zwane.

Even though the home side enjoyed more ball possession, it was the 'Free Staters' who had more scoring chances in the second half. And they once again came close in the 64th minute when Khauleza unleashed what looked like a fierce, goal-bound shot, but his attempt hit the side netting.

Facing the prospect of relegation in the face, Stars desperately introduced veteran striker Wilfred Mugeyi in the 78th minute, but his presence did little to spur on his team-mates.

The full-time goal-less score, plus news of results from the other Castle Premiership matches on the same day, put the final nail in the coffin for the 2004/05 National First Division champions, who will play in the Mvela Golden League in the 2006/07 season.
