Classic, Swallows reach stalemate
Sunday May 07 2006
Moroka Swallows and Tembisa Classic played to a 1-1 draw in an entertaining Castle Premiership match played at the Herman Immelman Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The result means that Classic join Dynamos in surviving the big axe to the Mvela Golden League.
'Yizo Yizo' showed their intentions to stay in the top-flight as early as the first minute when Bradley August unleashed a good shot towards the Swallows goals, but his attempt was was parried away by 'Birds' goalkeeper Greg Etafia.
Classic continued piling pressure on Swallows, forcing the home side to concede three corner-kicks within the first five minutes of the match.
The Gavin Hunt-coached side replied to the pressure by staging quick counter-attacks in the Classic danger area. That strategy nearly paid dividends in the eigth minute when Zimbabwean Edzai Kasinauyo cleverly beat a Classic off-side trap, but his pass to star striker Mame Niang was too strong, much to the dissatisfaction of the fans and Hunt.
In the 26th minute, the visitors' goalkeeper Aime Kitenge did well to tip Swallows Player of the Year award winner Lefa Tsutsulupa's goal-bound shot over the bar and three minutes later, Collin Zimba missed a golden opportunity to put Classic ahead when he received a good pass from former Ajax player Bradley August - managing only to balloon his shot over the bar.
The KZN-based side were presented with yet another scoring opportunity in the 30th minute, but not even the travelling fans' cries of 'Steeeeve' could spur Steve Lekoelea to fire home from a free-kick.
Classic finally found the opener when the in-form David Makgale scored after a good build-up from the midfield. The 'Beautiful Birds' could have equalised almost immediately afterwards, but Classic defender Thabang Rooi desperately cleared Niang's header off the line with Kitenge well-beaten.
The home side attained the much-needed equaliser in the 70th minute when Tseu Mokoro scored after a scramble in the Classic goal-mouth area.
Etafia then produced what could easily be a strong candidate for save of the match when he stretched to deny Rooi from scoring via an 85th minute header, leaving the final score at 1-1 after a ding-dong 90 minutes.
