Mokoena to miss COSAFA Cup

Bafana Bafana defender and captain Aaron Mokoena has been ruled out of next week's COSAFA tournament in Botswana, after picking up a serious leg injury during Blackburn Rovers' 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

News agencies, AFP and SAPA, report that Mokoena was just eight minutes into his 20th Premiership start for Mark Hughes's UEFA Cup qualifiers when he was hurt trying to block an effort by City's former England Under-21 international Joey Barton.

Hughes admitted he was seriously concerned about Mokoena's injury, but the Blackburn manager was confident that Mokoena would be fit for the start of pre-season training in July.

"We don't think it's as serious as we first thought it could be," said Hughes.

He added: "The damage is on the outside of the leg, but we're confident he will make a full recovery and be okay."

Mokoena was to have captained Bafana Bafana against Swaziland in the COSAFA tournament in Botswana on Saturday, May 20, but caretaker coach Pitso Mosimane will now have to make do without his inspirational defender.
