Birds host Sakhabanqobi tourney
Wednesday June 07 2006
Plans for the staging of the third annual Sakh'abanqobi (meaning - creating winners) Youth Tournament, are well on track, hosts Moroka Swallows FC announced on Wednesday afternoon.
"We have scaled the teams down to 24 entries, although we did want it to be maximum of 16 but due to public demand we decided to increase the total to 24 clubs," Michelle Varner, Marketing and Events Manager at Swallows, told the club's official website.
Varner confirmed that there had been a phenomenal response to the tournament.
"We had a very good response from teams wishing to participate, but as we said it was on a first-come-first-served basis.
"We had our full quota long before the closing date for applications."
Junior teams from Castle Premiership sides Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, Silver Stars and Swallows have been seeded in each of the four groups.
The 'Junior Birds' are the current title-holders and are expected to put up a strong performance at the annual competition.
Varner also confirmed that prizes will be awarded to the top Goal-Scorer, Goalkeeper and Player of the Tournament.
Monetary prizes for the four top sides are as follows:
Third place: R4,000
Fourth place: R2,000
The organisers have also lined-up a range of entertainment activities for the fans.
