Monday August 07 2006
The Moroka Swallows Under-19 squad has made an impressive start in the annual Supersport Under-19 Youth Tournament, which is being currently held at the SAFA Development Centre in Pimville, Soweto.
The 'Junior Birds' have, so far claimed the scalp of some of the junior sides of the PSL Castle Premiership sides, including Santos and Kaizer Chiefs, who were both beaten 1-0 by the 'Beautiful Birds' in the group stage matches.
The youngsters also played brilliantly against in their third group stage match, against BidVest Wits, but could manage only a 0-0 draw.
The Gauteng-based squad managed to get back to their winning ways when they beat Jomo Cosmos 3-1 (0-0 after full-time) on penalities in their fourth group stage fixture.
Meanwhile, Moroka Swallows Head of Youth Development Paul Habib has stated that he is not fully encouraged by the performances of his charges so far.
"We have played fairly well, but I don't think we have reached the performance level that we are capable of," Habib told the official Moroka Swallows website.
The 'Junior Birds' mentor was, however, confident that the youngsters would "step-up their performance gears" when they clash against Ajax Cape Town in the semi-final match on Wednesday, August 9 at the same venue.
"The semi-final fixture against Ajax Cape Town represents our biggest hurdle.
"They are a really good side, but I'm confident that the boys will rise to the challenge on Wednesday."
The match kicks-off at 09.30 and will be televised live on the SuperSport Soccer Channel.
