In preparation for the second half of the season, the Birds were engaged in a friendly tournament at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.
The other sides involved were Premier Soccer League (PSL) rivals Bidvest Wits, Platinum Stars and SuperSport United.
Moroka Swallows were pitted against Wits in the first match of the day and got off to a winning start, beating the hosts 4-3 on penalties and progressed to the final.
MacBeth Sibaya had the Birds 1-0 up in the first half after converting from the penalty spot, but the opponents equalised in the second stanza through Calvin Kadi.
With both sides tied 1-1 at full-time and the winner had to be determined through a penalty shootout.
Roger da Costa, Gilbert Mapemba, Joseph Makhanya and Lefa Tsutsulupa converted all of their place-kicks for the Birds.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Greg Etafia did well to hold on to Kadi's shot and was only too happy to watch Mzikayise Mashaba's attempt hit the post to seal the win and a spot in the final.
After a long break, the Birds faced SuperSport - who got the better of Stars - to determine the overall winner of the tournament.
Clifford Mulenga opened the scoring in the first half for the opponents, but Sibusiso Khumalo levelled matters with a fine lob over the advancing 'keeper.
Neither side could find the winner in regulation time and it was down to the lottery of penalties to resolve matters.
SuperSport won the shootout 5-4 and the Birds had to be content with second place and two solid matches, giving all players time on the pitch.
