Birds and Celtic Draw 1-1

Moroka Swallows (1) 1 (Manqele 16’)
Bloemfontein Celtic (0) 1 (Gabonamong 49’)

A stunning strike from Mogogi Gabonamong secured a 1-1 draw for Bloemfontein Celtic against Moroka Swallows in an Absa Premiership encounter at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Edward Manqele opened the scoring for the Birds, who have yet to win in 2014.

After a tentative opening 16 minutes Edward Manqele broke the deadlock from a Lerato Chabangu corner-kick.

Manqele made a darting run to the near post before nodding the ball past Tignyemb to bag his seventh goal of the campaign.

Greg Etafia made a great save to deny Keagan Buchanan in the 21st minute. The youngster’s curling free-kick looked certain to rattle the back of the net but the Dube Birds stalwart was up to the task.

Swallows somehow survived a mad scramble inside their box in the 39th minute. Lefa Tsutsulupa cleared off the line after Etafia failed to gather before Clayton Daniels headed over from close range.

Siwelele looked the better side as the half came to an end but they weren’t able to alter the score before the interval.

Mogogi Gabonamong levelled matters with a powerful strike from range four minutes into the second stanza. Swallows failed to cleared from danger and were punished by the Botswana national, whose crisp strike left Etafia helpless.

Lerato Chabangu’s stinging effort almost snuck into Tignyemb’s goal in the 62nd minute.

The midfielder’s powerful strike took a wicked deflection off Daniels before bouncing narrowly wide of Tignyemb’s goal.

The Cameroon shot stopper made an impressive save to deny Giorgi Nergadze from point-blank range in the 85th minute. Larry Cohen’s header into the danger zone fell favourably for the Georgian midfielder but he was unable to find a way past the Phunya Sele Sele keeper.

Swallows dominated the final exchanges but were unable to find the back of the net. The Dube Birds have yet to win since the turn of the year, the draw moves them up to 11th spot on the log while Celtic move into the top eight.
