'Birds' fly over Leopards

Moroka Swallows have moved to seventh in the Absa Premiership standings after beating Black Leopards 3-1 in Thohoyandou on Wednesday afternoon.

Swallows have now won their last three games and have found the back of the net nine times in the process.

'The Dube Birds' dominated play in the first half, and made their intentions clear in the opening minutes when Sandile Ndlovu's long distance effort went just wide of Mashudu Mamphitha's goal.

However, it was the home side that opened the scoring in scorching conditions in the 12th minute. Mulondo Sikhwivhilu latched on to a long ball from Peter Mponda and cooly slotted it past Greg Etafia.

Sikhwivhilu came close to adding a second just four minutes later, but his well-struck shot hit the bar.

James Chamanga came close to extending his tally as the Absa Premierships' top goal-scorer in the 42nd minute, but Mamphitha did well to parry his shot out for a corner, which eventually led to Swallows' equaliser.

Defender Bevan Fransman met Cecil Oersen's corner at the far-post and his header beat the Leopards 'keeper to ensure the teams went into the break on level terms.

The home side created the first chance of the second half just minutes after the restart, but Robert Ng'ambi headed Jabu Maluleke's cross over the bar.

Leopards had several more chances in the second half, but poor finishing meant the game was locked in a stalemate until Chamanga put Swallows in the lead in the 69th minute.

The Zambian striker netted his 13th goal of the 2007/08 season with a fine shot after he received a pass from Oersen on the edge of the Leopards penalty area.

Substitute Evans Gwekwerere sealed the valuable three points for Swallows ten minutes later. The midfielder reacted quickly to steer the ball past Mamphitha on the second attempt after the 'keeper saved his initial shot.

Black Leopards: Mamphitha, Ramavhale, Mponda, Lubanzadio, Toromba, Maluleke (Shongwe 79), Mulaudzi, Ng'ambi (Hlalele 79), Sikhwivhilu, Kondowe, Ramulondi (Dlamini 46).
