Swallows soar in Durban

Moroka Swallows are one step away from securing a top eight finish in the 2007/08 Absa Premiership, after a convincing 2-0 win over AmaZulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The visitors created the fist real chance of the match in the second minute, with James Mayinga's long-range shot caught by Kalilo Kakonje, before Mark Haskins did well to force a save from the AmaZulu 'keeper eight minutes later.

Swallows were looking dangerous and Sandile Ndlovu should have put the Soweto side ahead in the 18th minute but sent his header wide of goal.

Swallows shot-stopper Greg Etafia was hardly troubled during the first half of the match, but AmaZulu striker Mpho Maleka missed a good chance to put the hosts ahead after 21 minutes when he fired over the bar from close range.

AmaZulu created a few more chances but were unable to penetrate the Swallows defence led by Etafia, who had an excellent game.

'Usuthu' were punished for wasting their chances shortly before half-time when 'Birds' defender Bevan Fransman's deflected shot found the back of the net for a valuable 1-0 lead.

Swallows kept attacking in the second half, with Japhet Zwane shooting over the bar in the 46th minute and Ndlovu blasting the ball wide of goal 10 minutes later.

The 'Birds' were eventually rewarded with a second goal in the 76th minute after Tswhedu Mokoro was brought down in the opposition box. Ndlovu stepped up to the spot and buried the ball past Kakonje to make up for his earlier misses.

Mokoro got a chance to put his own name on the scoresheet two minutes before the final whistle, but Kakonje managed to hold on to his well-struck shot.

Swallows are now in fifth place in the Absa Premiership standings with 42 points.
