Preview - Santos v Swallows

After being eliminated in the semi-finals of the Absa Cup by fellow Capetonians Ajax Cape Town last Sunday, Engen Santos are hoping to bid their long-serving defender Edries 'Burty' Burton a winning farewell when they host Moroka Swallows in a Castle Premiership match at Athlone Stadium on Friday evening (kick-off 8pm).

The encounter against the 'Birds' will be Burton's last match in front of his beloved Santos contingent since joining the club - then known as Lightbodies Santos - in the 1989-90 season, having moved from amateur club Moonlighters AFC.

Former SA Under-23 international Thando Mngomeni told the official PSL website this week that 'Burty' deserved a winning sending off after his extraordinary career.

"'Burty' has earned all the success he has had through hard work. I mean, the guy is never injured; you can always rely on him," said Mngomeni.

"I have been fortunate to have played alongside him, since joining from the development side, and it has been an honour to have rubbed shoulders with such a person in my short career.

"We must win at home on Friday for his sake so that he can take the position of COO of the club with pride."

Speedy Santos midfielder Jonathan Armogam added that 'Burty' could be very proud of what he had achieved in his long and distinguished career.

"He is a good professional and a great role model, not only for me personally but for other youngsters as well," Armogam explained. "I will miss having him around as a guide and advisor."
