Lefa dominates 'Birds' Awards

Lefa Tsutsulupa dominated the senior Men's category when he won both the Player of the Year and the Players' Player of the Year during the Moroka Swallows Annual Awards ceremony held at the Birchwood Hotel on Wednesday, May 3.

Tsutsulupa was at pains to describe how hard he worked for the achievement and dedicated the award to his daughter.

The former Jomo Cosmos player received a whopping R40,000 for scooping both awards.

Coach gavin Hunt said he never lost hope on Lefa and knew that he had the ambition and talent to become a great player.

"It may be unbelievable to many that merely one season ago; a player who was deemed to be surplus to requirements at his former club is now such a brilliant player for Moroka Swallows.

"I have always had faith in Lefa because he works hard, he has ambition and is dedicated.

"He is definitely a good talent for the future and wish he will be an important part of the senior national squad," commented Hunt.

The 'Birds' and the Castle Premiership's leading goal-scorer, Mame Niang, won a well-deserved Top Goal-Scorer Award. The lethal Senegalese striker dedicated his award to the late Swallows goal-minder Conrad Hendricks.

Niang was rewarded with a R7,000 for his efforts.

Former SuperSport United midfielder Tsweu Mokoro was voted Most Improved Player and he walked away with a medal, plus R7,500 for his troubles.

The VW Service Award went to 'keeper Greg Etafia, who received a handsome R10,000 prize money for displaying consistency throughout the season, despite suffering major setbacks.

Trusted defender Gary McNab walked away with the Service Award for the loyalty, dedication and the outstanding leadership he has shown in the seven years of service at the club.

McNab, whose contract at the club elapses at the end of the current season, thanked Swallows management and technical staff for allowing him to be a part of the famous 'Beautiful Birds', also wishing them well for the forthcoming season.
