'Rabbits' hold 'Birds' to goalless draw
Sunday September 17 2006
Newcomers Benoni Premier United held Moroka Swallows to a 0-0 draw at the Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams took the game to each other from as early as the first whistle. Swallows could've wrapped it up in the first half, but it looked as if the usually potent Mame Niang had left his scoring boots at home. The 2005/06 Castle Premiership top goal-scorer fluffed glorious chances in the 17th, 20th and 31st minute.
Premier United were impressive when making forward forays, more especially when Brain Kgafane and July Mahlangu were in possession.
The 'Rabbits' could have opened their account in the 40th minute, but Katlego Loke chose to shoot wide with the opposition's keeper Greg Etafia at his mercy.
The end of the first half was characterised by a spate of rough play from both sides.
The beginning of the second half saw a change of strategy from the 'Beautiful Birds' side. The Gavin Hunt-coached club introduced "Captain Fantastic' Goodman Mazibuko for George Hummel.
Mazibuko did not disappoint as he performed his midfield anchorman role with the usual distinction he gives in the maroon and white 60th anniversary Swallows jersey.
Swallows continued to search for that elusive opener, but Lefa Tsutsulupa and Patrick Thwala's impressive build-up play was wasted by wayward shooting from Niang and Evans Gwegwekerere.
Both strikers seemed to have run out of ideas.
It was not all Swallows though as the newly-promoted Stars looked dangerous on a number of occasions deep in the second half..
The match ended with neither side finding the back of the net. It is very clear that both sides will need to work hard at bringing some improvement to their striking forces if they want to make a serious mark in the Catle Premiership this season.
