'Injury Time' with Dr E - 13/12/2008

With the excitement of the biggest soccer event in Africa having come and gone, the PSL action moves into full swing yet again when our 'Beautiful Birds' lock horns with perennial rivals Orlando Pirates at Potchefstroom's Olenpark Stadium on Wednesday night.

Swallows will be without two new signings Edward Malinga and Siphesihle Ngobese, both of whom are out with knee injuries.

The 'Birds' ward round is as follows:

1. Cecil Oerson:
Diagnosis: Grade 3A tear of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus, right knee.
Investigations: Diagnosis confirmed by an MRI scan done September 17, 2007.
Surgery: Arthroscopic repair on September 26, 2007.
He has been training without any adverse effects. He is, however, still continuing with quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises.
Opinion: Not fit for this Wednesday.

2. Bjorn Gugger:
Had lateral menisectomy on his left knee a few years ago. He subsequently suffered damages to the cartilage in that joint. Operation done in January 2007.
Opinion: Out for this Wednesday.

3. Tebogo Monyai:
Operations:
- Open reduction and internal fixation of right tibia (leg bone) following a fracture in January 2007.
- Chondroplasty (arthroscopy) right knee in April 2007.
- Right groin operation (Gilmores' groin) in April 2007.
He has started training, but not fit for this Wednesday.

4. George Hummel:
He had a left tibia operation late 2006, following a troublesome stress fracture.
Played the last seven league matches of the 2006/2007 season, and has been training/playing this season without any adverse effects.
Started complaining of persistent left leg pains and a subsequent X-Ray done yesterday revealed a recurrence of the old fracture.
Operation: Revision surgery of left tibia. Fracture defect was bone-grafted.
Date of operation: November 19, 2007.
Opinion: He has started training but not fit for this Wednesday.

5. Edward Malinga:
Injured right knee on February 2, 2008.
Diagnosis: Grade 1 Medial Collateral Ligament(MCL) sprain, right knee.
Opinion: Out until February 18, 2008.

6. Vincent Kobola:
Injured left knee on January 26, 2008.
Diagnosis: Patellar tendinopathy, right knee.
Opinion: Out until February 18, 2008.

7. Patrick Thwala:
Injured left knee on February 2, 2008.
Diagnosis: Grade 1 MCL sprain, left knee.
Opinion: Will depend on outcome of a late fitness test.

8. Siphesihle Ngobese:
He has been struggling with persistent pains on his right knee for a long time.
Diagnosis: Patellar tendinopathy, right knee.
Opinion: Out until February 24, 2008.

Till next week,

Cheers!
