Big money on offer in Absa Premiership

For the first time in the history of South African soccer, Absa, the new sponsors of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), will award a total of R29,450,000.00 in prize money to the 16 teams participating in the Absa Premiership. This amount is three times more than the previous prize money pot.

The team that will be crowned the Absa Premiership champions in 2007/08, will collect a whopping R10-million.

The generous prize pot is part of the many incentives that the Absa Premiership will be offering to clubs in its mandate to develop and enhance the quality of local football and encourage exciting play during the season.

"The Premier Soccer League is proud to have a sponsor like Absa on board. Since the beginning of our partnership, it has been tremendous to see our relationship grow in leaps and bounds," said Kjetil Siem, the Premier Soccer League's Chief Executive Officer.

"Their commitment to soccer and its development is evident in terms of the prize money they are awarding."

On Thursday, in the same week that the domestic soccer league got underway after being in recess over December and January, Absa officially launched the Absa Premiership at the Eye of Africa on the 50th Floor of the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg.

According to a PSL press release, the significance of launching the league on top of the highest building in South Africa "is a symbolic indication of Absa's commitment to the highest level of domestic football".

As the old adage goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Absa took the first step all the way back to 1982 when they sponsored the United Bank Challenge.

In 2003, they re-entered the football arena when they took up the sponsorship of the Absa Cup 'The Cup of Dreams'.

Last year, Absa took two bold steps, when they secured the sponsorships of the national team and the league - the Absa Premiership.

"At Absa we believe it is what we do today that determines the quality of our tomorrows. Together with the PSL, our partnership will ensure an even better quality of football," said Happy Ntshingila, Absa's Group Executive, Group Marketing.

Apart from vying for the grand prize of R10-million, the Absa Premiership champions will have the honour of lifting the newly-designed Absa Premiership trophy unveiled at the launch.

From the beginning of March, Absa are also introducing a Man of the Match Award, which will be awarded at every fixture during the remainder of the season, and going forward, for every fixture in the full season.

Each player awarded a Man of the Match prize, will receive an Absa Premiership medal in recognition of his outstanding performance on the day.

At the end of each month a panel of judges will review all the players nominated for Man of the Match Awards, to select a Player of the Month Award. The Player of the Month will be rewarded with a cheque for R10,000.
"Our sponsorship of the Absa Premiership is a significant milestone in advocating Absa's brand traits of 'Ideas that deliver'," explained Ntshingila.

"Through this sponsorship, Absa makes a fundamental contribution to the continued growth and ongoing development of the quality of South African football and taking it to even greater heights. Our financial support of the beautiful game is a true demonstration of an idea that we are confident will deliver results," concluded Ntshingila.

Bevan is staying in the nest! Your views?

Great news - we can continue to build around him!
Wonderful, but there is too much pressure on him.
It doesn't matter, as I was already resigned to losing him...
