It's official - Phiri rejoins the nest
Moroka Swallows have officially signed Maimane Phiri on a six-month deal - completing the star midfielder's fairytale return to the club.
The 33-year-old has been training with Swallows over the past few days, but the club on Monday confirmed that he had finally put pen to paper for the remainder of the season with an option to renew.
"It's very exciting to be back at Swallows," Phiri told morokaswallows.co.za. "I want to thank the club - Leon (Prins) and the coaches - for this opportunity; I won't disappoint them!"
Whilst Phiri would love to earn himself an extension on his initial six-month deal, he has vowed to put the club first, adding: "If I can perform and help the club, it will do my chances of a contract extension no harm at all. First and foremost, however, my aim is to help Swallows win some trophies... the rest will take care of itself."
Swallows are currently in fifth place in the Absa Premiership standings, having earned 22 points from their first 15 matches before the league went into recess at the end of December.
The 'Beautiful Birds' first league match in 2008 is set for Wednesday, February 13, against Orlando Pirates at Germiston Stadium.
"The club is in great shape at the moment and we have a chance to challenge for top honours," said Phiri.
"[But] we need to work hard on the training ground and keep pushing - it's up to us to bring the silverware home."
Phiri - who began the 2007/08 season at SuperSport United - was born on June 22, 1974 in Alexandra, Gauteng. He has represented Genclerbirligi (in Turkey), Jomo Cosmos, Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport, whilst he was also a member of the Bafana Bafana squad at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
