Swallows beat United on penalties
Moroka Swallows beat SuperSport United 4-3 on a penalty shootout in the first match of the Gauteng Challenge at Super Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game had to be decided on penalties after the two teams were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation time play.
With the Highveld heat coming down hard on players, the game started at a very low pace, but it gathered momentum as it progressed.
Swallows were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute after United captain Ricardo Katza was adjudged to have fouled Tsweu Mokoro inside the penalty box. Evans Gwekwerere converted from the penalty to put the 'Birds' into the lead.
Gwekwerere almost completed his brace in the 28th minute, but was an inch too short from heading in Edzai Kasinauyo's free-kick.
Katza finally redeemed himself for his earlier mistake when he scored from a well-taken free-kick to level the scores.
Swallows 'keeper Aubrey Mathibe did well to produce a double save in the 41st minute - saving Fikru Tefera's powerful shot before denying young Philani Khwela from the rebound.
The score remained 1-1 at half-time.
The two teams adapted a more defensive approach in the second half and as a result, the goal-scoring opportunities were few and far in the remainder of the match.
The lottery of penalties had to decide the outcome of the game in the end; with Swallows emerging the winners after converting four of their penalties and United missing two of theirs.
