Maritzburg relegation woes continue

Maritzburg United?s intentions of avoiding relegation suffered a serious blow after they narrowly lost 3-2 to ten-man Moroka Swallows in a PSL game played at Germiston stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Swallows started the game like men possessed, and it was obvious that Gavin Hunt?s boys intentions were to finish the 2007 PSL season as title runners-up.

The businesslike 'Dube Birds' efforts were rewarded as early as the 10th minute, when a well taken corner by Cecil Oerson was flicked into the path of Rudy Issacs who made no mistake with an easy tap-in.

Swallows continued to attack relentlessly, and two minutes after their first goal United's keeper, Aime Kitenge, brought down Songwe Chalwe inside the box, and middle man, Ace Ngcobo never hesitated in awarding Swallows a penalty. Songwe Chalwe made no mistake from the resultant spot kick, giving the 'Birds' their second goal of the day.

Gavin Hunt?s lads further emphasized their superiority over the coastal side when Japhet Zwane scored with a blistering shot in the 24th minute, leaving Kitenge with the task of picking the ball from the back of the net for the third time.

However, Mlungisi Ngubane?s team managed to pull one back in the 31st minute. The goal was a result of a well taken free kick just on the edge of the box by Onismor Bhasera.

The goal seemed to have brought Maritzburg United back into the game as they invaded Swallows territory on numerous occasions, but their efforts were thwarted by the 'Birds,' defence manned by former Kaizer Chiefs man, Bevan Fransman

One minute before halftime, referee Ace Ngcobo stamped his authority on the field when he red-carded Swallows strong man, George Hummel, for elbowing a United player.

The half time score was 3-1.

In the second half, Maritzburg United must have been motivated by what their mentor Mlungisi Ngubane. The coastal side came back stronger, but Swallows players stood firm.

It was a half of missed chances, as Swallows tried to increase their tally, and Maritzburg United trying to level matters.

Swallows could have increased their tally to four, but after a good move initiated by Tshweu Mokoro in the 76th minute, the lanky Hendricko Botes fluffed a golden opportunity. It came as no surprise when the Namibian striker was replaced by the lanky Mame Niang in the 79th minute.

However, Maritzburg United gave Swallows their biggest scare of the day when they scored their second goal in the 81st minute in the shape of Luntu Mazana, after Swallows keeper, Greg Etafia failed to communicate with his defenders.

After the goal, Maritzburg United piled on the pressure, but it was a little too late for them to grab an equalizer.
