Swallows win Macufe Cup
Moroka Swallows beat Jomo Cosmos 2-1 in a penalty shootout to win the 2007 Macufe Cup Final in Bloemfontein on Sunday night.
The two teams booked their places in the final of the Macufe Cup after beating locals Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars on penalties.
While the score-line might not accurately reflect the intensity of a closely-fought encounter, the Bloemfontein crowd was indeed treated to an entertaining brand of football.
Swallows took the lead in the 21st minute via an Ivan WInstanley header, after receiving a cross from Patrick Thwala.
The 'Birds' joy was shortlived though as Dipsy Selolwane equalised for 'Ezenkosi' three minutes later when he beat Aubrey Mathibe with a low left-footed shot.
The score remained 1-1 at half-time.
Swallows looked strong in the second half as they took the game to Cosmos and should have taken the lead in the 61st minute, only for Thwala to shoot wide.
Evans Gwekwerere also came close to putting the 'Birds' in the lead five minutes later when his header almost forced Cosmos 'keeper Zico Shiningayamwe to make a save, but the ball hit the side netting.
'Ezenkosi's best chance of the half fell to Selolwane in the 82nd minute when the Botswana international dribbled his way past two Swallows defenders, but his shot was saved by Swallows 'keeper Aubrey Mathibe.
The referee blew his final whistle minutes later to take the game into the dreaded penalty shootout, with Swallows emerging victorious in the end.
