Volkswagen South Africa has reinforced their commitment to South African football with the renewal of title sponsorship of Moroka Swallows. The decision by Volkswagen is seen to be a positive step towards the advancement of the people’s game in South Africa and the desire to support the growth of football in this country.
Volkswagen announced the sponsorship renewal at the prestigious and glamorous launch of the new Moroka Swallows, held at Capello’s in Kliptown, Soweto on the 1ST of July 2008. Media personalities, fashion and Marketing gurus and the Swallows family attended the event.
Since the start of the Volkswagen sponsorship in August 2005, Moroka Swallows and Volkswagen have pooled their resources in the quest to keep one of South Africa’s oldest and most recognised soccer brands on top of its game.
Moroka Swallows CEO, Leon Prins said, “We were absolutely thrilled when Volkswagen came on board three years ago and we are extremely proud that Volkswagen has decided to renew their title sponsorship until 2011! The relationship between the team and Volkswagen has grown from strength to strength and as a result, the club has been able to continuously strive for improvement, both on and off the field. Volkswagen South Africa has shown confidence and trust in Moroka Swallows to utilize the club as a vehicle to leverage their brand. There is no better association than partnering the people’s car with the people’s game”.
Moroka Swallows seek to soar to greater heights once again. The club has announced that it will leave no stone unturned to bring back its days of glory and glamour and thus have extensively refurbished their nest. Going forward, the club will embrace an image of being youthful, innovative, glamorous, funky and fashionable by bringing exciting new elements into the mix.
The club’s management has been very busy during the off season, preparing for a great team performance on and off the field. In a bid to restore the club’s former glory and beautiful style of play, Moroka Swallows has pulled out all the stops to bring Julio Cesar Leal, a highly acclaimed Brazilian coach, on board.
Leal’s coaching credentials speak for themselves, with achievements that include having won the U20 World Cup with Brazil as Head Coach, fulfilling the role of technical assistant to Carlos Parriera in the 2006 World Cup and coaching top teams such as Flamengo and Fluminese (of Brazil).
Included in the new squad is the Brazilian trio of Igor Alves, an attacking midfielder and defenders, Vinicius Da Silva and Davi Rancan Afonso. From South Africa, the club has signed Ryan Botha from Thanda Royal Zulu FC and Morgan Shivambu from Winners Park. From the Development Academy, the talented Daniel Hlabangani and Ace Bhengu have been promoted to the first team.
Off the field, preparations comprise of the introduction of a new and interactive Website, an innovative Mobi-Site (a first of its kind in the South African football industry), Moroka Swallows Television, an improved Supporters Club and a Swallows fashion range, designed by Darkie, one of South Africa’s top fashion designers. The club has unveiled their new modernised Swallows logo and fashionable kit design.
The launch of the new Moroka Swallows is the first page of a new chapter and is the start of a soaring future for the Beautiful Birds.
