In a recent interview, Moroka Swallows head coach, Steve Komphela, shared his views on the potential dominance of Orlando Pirates in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) akin to the reign of current giants, Mamelodi Sundowns. Komphela’s optimism comes on the heels of Pirates’ MTN8 title victory, where he believes they demonstrated their potential to challenge the status quo.
The 56-year-old tactician argued that the Buccaneers are on the brink of realizing their full potential. He emphasized their patience and methodical approach to their build-up play, suggesting that it could be the key to challenging the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns recently tasted defeat at the hands of Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final, marking a significant turning point in the rivalry between these two football powerhouses. “In the current South African football landscape, Orlando Pirates stands out as a team that, in my opinion, could step into the spotlight should any changes occur within Mamelodi Sundowns” Komphela remarked during an interview with the SABC. However, he also highlighted that this transformation is about to click, and those unfamiliar with the pieces of the puzzle may not fully grasp the imminent breakthrough.
Drawing parallels with the English Premier League, Komphela used Liverpool as a case study. He pointed out that Liverpool’s transformation into a formidable side required strategic acquisitions, particularly in the form of Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker. He further reiterated his belief that Orlando Pirates may need to bolster their goalkeeping department and acquire a reliable centre-back to complete the puzzle. “It is the same discussion I had with Bra Stan ‘Screamer’ Tshabalala when they were heavily involved in Orlando Pirates” Komphela stated. He emphasized that he was not advising the club but engaging in a football discussion based on the lessons from Liverpool’s journey to the top.
